10-Watt Red Fluoride Double-Clad Fiber Laser
Oxxius 10-watt red fiber laser research today
Presented at the Advanced Solid State Lasers (ASSL) conference in 2024, this paper reports a 10-watt red fluoride double-clad fiber laser delivering 9.1 W CW at 635 nm with 27.0% slope efficiency and single-mode output, pumped by a 442 nm GaN blue diode module. In quasi-CW operation, output is further scaled to 10.32 W, crossing the 10-watt threshold for the first time in this class of visible fiber laser. This ASSL conference paper is the first public presentation of results that were subsequently published in full detail in Optics Express in 2025.
The double-clad Pr:ZBLAN fiber architecture used here (with a 0.8 mol% PrF₃-doped gain fiber and a fiber-coupled GaN pump) represents the current state of the art in compact visible fiber laser design. At 635 nm, single-mode output at the 10-watt level opens a new power regime for applications in flow cytometry, super-resolution microscopy, and optogenetics, where high-brightness red excitation has historically required bulky and expensive laser systems.
Oxxius’s High-Power Diode Modules at 442 nm provide the pump brightness required to drive this fiber laser architecture to record output levels — and represent the enabling technology behind this class of visible fluoride fiber laser demonstrations.
Abstract
A continuous-wave 442-nm blue diode-pumped double-clad Pr: ZBLAN fiber laser yields 9.1 W at 635 nm with 27.0% slope efficiency and a single-mode output and in the quasi-continuous-wave regime, it is scaled to 10.32 W.
